This week in music education at your magnet school for the arts:

WARNING: this post contains a LOT of information... proceed at your own risk (you might learn something)

David Aaron Carpenter - Violist
  • Acclaimed violist David Aaron Carpenter will be visiting CPMA on Thursday. David has been featured in Strad Magazine, and referred to as a violist whose "soulful sound, committed playing and dazzling technique leaves little to desire". He has performed at Carnegie Hall, been honored by Gramophone Magazine, been presented a Presidential Gold Medal after a performance at the Kennedy Center for the Arts, and won a number of international viola competitions, including the Walter E. Naumburg Competition in 2006. He has studied at Juilliard, the Manhattan School of Music, and holds a degree from Princeton University.
  • Students in both string classes will be invited to attend the performance, which is being provided though a partnership with the La Jolla Music Society.
    • Yes, he has a website.
    • And yes, there are multiple videos of him available - check out some videos on his YouTube channel!
    • And yes, we have a limited number of complimentary tickets available to his concert Sunday (Jan. 31st, 3:00pm at the Neuroscience Institute, UCSD)
  • Pics of places and items relating to David Aaron Carpenter

The Baltimore Consort
  • Last week a number of classes were privileged enough to attend an "informance" presented by the Baltimore Consort. Students were exposed to music and instruments from from before 1800. Viola da gamba, flutes and lutes - oh my! (Paying attention? Did you catch the Wizard of Oz reference)....

(I suggest "Pinetops", which is just crazy good... in fact, here's a video of him performing the tune)
  • The Consort was kind enough to leave a few recordings, which we would be happy to "share" with our students and music community. Click on a photo to be taken to the album itself on amazon.com (you know, to check things out).

Okay, on to school related business:

  • FUNDRAISER - Eat at Joe's Pizza in Clairemont on Wednesday (27th) from 4:00 to 9:00 and 20% of your bill will be contributed to the CPMA Music Department. It's an easy way to help out your school while enjoying their incredible buffet for only about $8.00. Yummy!
  • No coupon or flier required (i.e. just go, eat, and you'll be helping out our students)! Check out the attached promo flier.
  • The Mission Bay Jazz Band Concert has been pushed back a week due to this week's altered bell schedule.
  • Honor Band and Orchestra Materials
    • 6th Grade Honor Band & Orchestra -
      • February 2nd at Madison High School
      • No early registration required. Just practice and show up!
    • Middle School Honor Band & Orchestra Auditions
      • February 4th at CPMA
      • Mr. Mulvaney has been registering students online (to request an audition)
    • Every student who auditions will have their lowest exam grade dropped, and we'll pay the participation fee for anyone who is accepted into these groups - we're proud of you!
  • Solo & Ensemble
    • February 27th at Oak Park Elementary School
    • Applications available in Room 504
    • Again, we'll pay your participation fees and give you extra credit for pursuing an opportunity that will make you a better musician!
Finally, school choice applications are due BY FEBRUARY 15th. Obviously if you go to our school, you need not re-apply. But, for outgoing 8th graders, get those forms in. If you know a potential CPMA student, please make sure to remind them to submit their enrollment application. These students at Oak Park will, (we hope)...

The auditions for the SDUSD Honor Bands & Orchestras are quickly approaching!

WHY SHOULD YOUR STUDENT AUDITION? (1) If accepted, they will perform alongside the best musicians their age in the entire district, (2) they will gain invaluable experience working under established guest conductors, (3) students often find themselves more engaged, confident, and motivated if they participate in these honor groups, and yes, (4) the CPMA Music Department will pay for your student to participate if/when they are accepted, and in addition, whether they are admitted to the group or not, their lowest exam grade will be dropped!

So, encourage your student to take charge of their education, and the opportunities we are helping provide for them!
  • Honor Band and Orchestra (All Levels)
    • Audition music, dates, and information for all the honor ensembles may be viewed here
      • Students auditioning for the "Middle School" Band or Orchestra must request a time online. Some have already done so.
      • 6th Graders auditioning for the "Elementary" Band or Orchestra need only show up on the audition date with the application completed.
    • Middle School Auditions - February 4th @ CPMA
    • Elementary/6th Grade Auditions - February 2nd at Madison High School
  • Solo & Ensemble Festival
    • February 27th at Oak Park Elementary
    • Share a solo, duet, or other group performance that you've been working on
    • Applications available from Mr. Mulvaney - we'll pay your participation fees for this also!
Also, here's the skinny on other happenings...

Finally, please continue to email our school board about the Performing Arts Center. It is imperative that our voices be heard. This facility needs to happen, and our students deserve a performing arts venue worthy of their talents. Make yourself heard by sending an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Thanks again for your continued support, and please do push your student to pursue some of these great upcoming opportunities!
