Weekly Update - February 16-19 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Matt Mulvaney

Here is the Weekly Update for February 16-19, 2010.

  • Honor Orchestra Rehearsal (6th Grade) - Tuesday, 6:00-8:30 at CPMA.
  • Honor Band Rehearsal (6th Grade) - Thursday, 6:15-8:30 at Madison High School.
  • Advanced Band Clinic
    • Friday during 7th Period (3:00-4:00)
    • Clinician: Music educator, trained adjudicator, 2007 Honor Band conductor, and Pomerado Band director Dean Hickman will be in to work with the advanced band on their festival selections.

Thank you to everyone for your emails to the board in support of our Performing Arts Center. Our efforts are not going unnoticed. Board member Katherine Nakamura visited CPMA and numerous individuals have been receiving email responses from various members of the board. As a result, the PAC project is getting some much needed attention. At this time, we really need to circle March 16th, when the next Prop S meeting will take place. We need representation at this event, even if it occurs during school hours.

Finally, the second semester has begun, and all grades begin anew. To help your student, please make sure that they (1) have their instrument in working order (and have reeds, cork grease, slide oil, etc), (2) have their method book and music, and (3) are practicing routinely at home. Music is simple - you will get out of it what you put in. Everyone has been provided the equipment and access to resources necessary to find success. What makes a student successful now is simply the amount of effort and dedication they put into learning and progressing.

Weekly Update - February 8-14 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Matt Mulvaney
Sunday, 07 February 2010 10:53

Here's the list of items covered in this week's update: open enrollment deadline for new students, SDUSD board member Nakamura's visit to CPMA, talking points for your Performing Arts Center letters, honor band and orchestra congratulations, second semester information, and of course, the regular events of the week.

Yes, there's a lot of information in this week's update. Please take a minute to read through and take action by emailing the board!

Open Enrollment Applications Due - FEBRUARY 15th

Want to go to CPMA next year? The enrollment deadline is fast approaching - February 15th

You can apply to CPMA in two ways:

  1. Send in your application to the Enrollment Options Department as soon as possible
  2. Apply Online to CPMA

If you are even considering CPMA you should apply. Why? Because if you apply and change your mind, you can still go to your neighborhood school. If you don't apply, you will not be considered following February 15th if you have not submitted an application.

All applications must be received by February 15th. If you have any questions regarding the CPMA Music Department, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Mulvaney at 786.546.2513.

SDUSD Board Member Ms. Nakamura Visits CPMA

I would like to thank SDUSD Board Member Ms. Nakamura for coming to visit CPMA last week. Ms. Nakamura came out to CPMA to examine our school, take a look at our fabulous programs, and of course, hear about the pressing need for our new Performing Arts Center.

Ms. Nakamura visited classes and shares our vision of the school. That is, she believes strongly in the value of the visual and performing arts, and believes that bungalows for the music program is "not a good plan for CPMA". She would like us as a community to, in her own words, "keep energized" and "get the support of the other members of the board and I don't know where they stand on this".

So, thank you to Ms. Nakamura for coming out. Now, let's keep moving this project forward by advocating our other board members.

Talking Points for YOUR Letters to the School Board

Thank you to everyone who has already helped submit letters to the board. They are hearing the message, and this project is gaining some more significant attention! Now, we need to move forward and convince those who are not yet with us (or not yet confirmed as being with us).

Here are a few talking points you can use when you email the board:

  • Thank Certain Members of the Board
    • Thank Ms. Nakamura for visiting CPMA on February 4th, and thank her for her open support of our Performing Arts Center.
    • You may also mention you share her belief that bungalows for music is "not a good plan for CPMA".
  • Stress the Importance of the Performing Arts Center (PAC) for Our School
    • We are a performing arts magnet with no dedicated performing arts facility
    • We have fabulous, highly populated programs in band, orchestra, jazz, percussion, choir, drama, and dance - all of which rely on such a facility
  • The Value of the Performing Arts Center (PAC) to the Clairemont Community
    • This project will be as asset to all schools within the Clairemont community
    • The social community of Clairemont welcomed CPMA with the understanding that inviting the magnet school to the area would bring with it significant facility upgrades
    • The PAC will be as asset to SDUSD, and would be able to host district functions
    • The PAC could be utilized by SDUSD teachers in collaboration with professional arts organizations, such as the California Music Educators Association, Orchestra Nova, and the La Jolla Music Society
  • The Consequences of Failing to Act
    • This project cannot wait. Failure to act quickly will have a significant negative impact on our school, its programs, and the students we serve
    • CPMA is a magnet school, and as such, students from across the district attend. They attend CPMA for its programs, and are under the expectation that the facilities will match the educational opportunities
    • It is very likely that portions of the Visual and Performing Arts Department (VAPA), including orchestra, band, percussion, and jazz ensemble will be placed in bungalows for an "indefinite" period of time if other portions of the school are renovated before the PAC is completed.
    • This (bungalows) is unacceptable for any period of time. It does a disservice to our school, programs, students, and community. Such a move will set back those displaced programs, hinder recruitment, and stifle the continued development of these growing departments. Does anyone want to see a 50-75 person ensemble crammed into a portable classroom?
There are a lot of things to consider when writing the board. Choose the topics that you feel most passionate about, and let them know. THE ONLY WAY TO GET THIS PROJECT PRIORITIZED IS TO KEEP THE ADVOCACY EFFORTS CONSISTENT. THERE IS A PROP S MEETING ON MARCH 16TH.

Here's the emails - let 'em know:

Honor Band & Orchestra - CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to the CPMA student-musicians who were selected to either the 6th grade honor band and orchestra, or the middle school honor band and orchestra. They are:

  • Long Le - French Horn
  • Daniel Webber - Baritone
  • Itzayana Ocampo -Percussion
  • Emily Svendsen - Viola
  • Joseph Hulett - Bass
  • Crystal Wu -Flute
  • Melissa Lambert - Trombone
  • Alonzo Gibbs - Baritone
  • Sahrang Han - Percussion
  • Zascha Jones - Violin
  • Amanda Hoffman - Violin
  • October Deyoung - Violin
  • Sophia Johnson - Bass

Congrats to all! Please be aware, 6th grade honor groups begin rehearsing this week (orchestra on Tuesday at CPMA, band on Thursday at Madison). Bravo!Smile

Your Regular Update (FINALLY)

  • Second Semester - Grades are fresh! Everyone starts Monday with an "A". Now, the job of every student is to keep/retain that "A".
  • Room 504 Closed Monday After School - Room 504 will be closed after school as Mr. Mulvaney has a CMEA meeting.
  • Honor Orchestra (6th Grade) - Rehearsal begins Tuesday at CPMA. Rehearsal will run from 6:00-8:30. See you there October, Zascha, Amanda, and Sophia.
  • Honor Band (6th Grade) - Rehearsal begins Thursday at Madison High School at 6:30. Rehearsal will go until 8:30. See you there Crystal, Melissa, Alonzo, and Sahrang.
  • Board Meeting TUESDAY AT 5pm - If you are not involved in any other event on Tuesday night, the VAPA Department needs you to attend the board meeting scheduled for 5pm. The truth is, the board is considering eliminating the VAPA Department. What is VAPA at the district level? It covers ALL the elementary music teachers, the honor bands and orchestras, instrument repairs, and many other district sponsored opportunities. All you have to do is SHOW UP at 5PM and "be seen supporting music education".

Lastly - Happy Valentine's Day!

V-Day

Thanks for making it to the end! There's a lot going on - let's keep it that way. Now, send those emails!

NOW - YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED UPDATE

There have been a lot of events and activities happening recently, and this week is no different. In all seriousness, our school is incredibly fortunate. We are able to provide an incredible number of opportunities for our students. Parents, please encourage your student to PURSUE these opportunities and not take them for granted!

One quick note before moving on to the agenda. Please email the school board with your letters of support for the Visual & Performing Arts (VAPA) and our school's proposed Performing Arts Center. We should be telling the board that (1) we appreciate their previous support for VAPA, and look forward to their continued support of music programs for every student in every school, and (2) the CPMA Performing Arts Center must be a district priority. It is essential for our programs, students, and school community. How can a school like CPMA (a magnet school for the performing arts which is rapidly growing and offers an incredible array of performing arts courses) be without such a facility for even a day longer?

Here's the board contact information (go ahead and copy them all with your email) - together we must advocate for our school, students, and community.
