Weekly Update - March 15-20 PDF Print E-mail

Here's the weekly music update for your magnet school of the arts:

Fundraiser

  • On Monday, March 15th we will begin a brief fundraiser. This fundraiser will help support our music program over the final months of the year. Students participating in the Music in the Parks trip will have their profits from the fundraiser deducted from the cost of attending.
  • The event will be brief, and all proceeds benefit the instrumental music department.
  • What do we pay for with the funds? Well, buses, coaches, guest artists, festival fees, new music, rosin, reeds, accessories, instrumental repairs, percussion accessories, guest clinicians, professional memberships for our school, mouthpieces, ligatures, neckstraps, honor band, solo festivals, honor orchestra, and more. That's a start.

Yearbook Photos

  • On Tuesday, the String Orchestra will have their yearbook photo taken during 5th period.
  • On Wednesday, the Wind Ensemble will have their yearbook photo taken during 7th period.
  • Let's look relatively uniform. How about black t-shirts (aka the CPMA Music one if you have it) and jeans? That sounds reasonable.

Mariinsky Symphony Orchestra

  • Friday night, the Mariinsky Symphony Orchestra will be in town for a one night only concert.
  • We still have a few tickets left. Just turn in the permission slip and be at CPMA dressed professionally at 6:30pm on Friday.

Honor Band & Orchestra

  • There are honor band and orchestra rehearsals all week long.
  • Check with your honor band/orchestra manager for details. There is a rehearsal everyday for someone starting on Wednesday.
  • HONOR BAND & ORCHESTRA CONCERT - Saturday, 7pm, Point Loma Nazarene University (Admission is free)
Thanks again for everyone's support of our students over the past few weeks. If you have photos or video from an event, please send them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . I'll put them up - current additions are on the video page and the Facebook page.

What an amazing time to be a CPMA musician! Here's a recap of the past week and what's on deck.

On the heels of last Saturday's impressive Solo & Ensemble festival performances this past weekend saw a number of impressive outings by CPMA students. Saturday saw the Jazz Ensemble dominate the scene at the City College Jazz Festival, the String Orchestra impress Jung Ho Pak and Orchestra Nova with their passion and personality, our choral students sing their hearts out at Point Loma in the Honor Choir, all while the music department hosted the 6th Grade Honor Band at our school! (And all that was only Saturday).

This week will again will provide a plethora of learning opportunities for our students. Here's the rundown, day by day (of course, you could use the calendar):

  • Monday - March 8th
    • 6th Grade Honor Band & Orchestra Rehearsal
  • Tuesday - March 9th
    • Band Festival Preview with Madison High School
      • The CPMA and Madison bands perform for each other and evaluate each other's performance.
      • The "preview" festival will take place in the auditorium (at CPMA) from 4:00 - 5:00. Late bus passes will be provided.
      • This is a fantastic event that really benefited the orchestra this past Saturday.
    • 6th Grade Honor Band & Orchestra Concert
      • 7:00 at Brown Chapel at PLNU. Admission to the concert is free.
      • Come support October, Zascha, Emily, Sophia, Amanda, Crystal, & Melissa (and some future members of our CPMA Music Family) as they play with San Diego's finest.
  • Wednesday - March 10th
    • Pre-Festival Clinic with Mr. Karl Fitch (SCSBOA Director of Festivals)
      • When: 7th Period, during Wind Ensemble
      • Mr. Fitch will come our and listen to the Wind Ensemble as they prepare for their first ever SCSBOA run event.
  • Thursday - March 11th
    • Middle School Honor Band & Orchestra Rehearsal
      • When: 5:00 - 8:00 pm
      • Where: Correia Middle School (map here)
      • Who: Long Le, Daniel Webber, Itzayana Ocampo, Sahrang Han, Emily Svendsen, & Joseph Hulett. Please be on time!
  • Friday - March 12th
    • SCSBOA Festival at San Diego State University (Permission Slip Required)
      • What: CPMA's first ever trip to the SCSBOA Band & Orchestra Festival. Admission is free to the concert (parking is not). See the attached files for more information!
        • Orchestra Performance at 6:00 pm
        • Band Performance at 7:30 pm
Where: The SDSU School of Music and Dance (Web Page Here, Map Here)
      • When: After school field trip. We will return at approximately 9:00pm.
      • Notes: Students may bring money for snacks, medals, pins, etc if they choose to.

Again, this is an amazing time to be a student at CPMA. Parents, please encourage your student to make the most of these opportunities. Ask them to play for you at home, "encourage" them to practice, and use the resources available to help grow as a musician (like free metronomes - metronomeonline.com & recordings from cpmamusic.com).

Next week - the Marinsky Symphony Orchestra from Russia will be in town (and yes, we've got tickets to that too)!

On the Horizon

On Friday, March 12th the Wind Ensemble (Period 7) and String Orchestra (Period 5) will be traveling to San Diego State University to participate in the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) festival. This competition will be an entirely new experience for CPMA students. CPMA has never had representation at this event. This festival will represent a significant challenge for our students. Parents, please support your students as they go through these experiences for the first time. This event has a reputation for being very "thorough".

There is a timeline attached for this event. The timeline has been updated since the previous version was released. The event is open to the public, and we would love to have some parental support in the audience if you can make it. Go CPMA!
