Here's the weekly music update for your magnet school for the arts!

First, I am really excited to announce - the Intonation Drone is BACK online! This is a fantastic way to work on playing in tune. Practice scales, etudes, solos, and ensemble music with the appropriate drones.

With six-weeks of school remaining, the push is on! The final concerts of the year will take place in a few weeks at the end of May. More detailed information, including dress rehearsal info will be available shortly.

Anyways, what's going on this week?

  • Music in the Parks - Payments are now beyond due for the June 4th trip. Fundraising totals and credits have been posted in the finance office. Please make your final payments as soon as possible (because we still need to pay these organizations).
  • Movies & Music Concerts - Info will be going out this week with detailed dress rehearsal and timeline information.
  • Jazz Festival at Tango Del Rey - Sunday, May 16th. The Tango Jazz Festival is the big event this week. Please see the attached poster for more information.
With just over three weeks remaining until the LAST round of concerts and field trips for the year, please encourage your student to work diligently. We want to finish the year strong. The CPMA Music program is proud to put on events throughout the entire course of the academic year, and we need all of our students practicing, playing, & performing with purpose until the end of the school year.

Here's the weekly update for your magnet school for the arts!

Congratulations to the Debut Strings ensemble for their strong performance at the 2010 CMEA Secondary Music Festival held this past weekend at Wangenheim Middle School. They did very well, and the adjudicators shared some very helpful comments with the students.

Also, a pat on the back is in order for Mr. Ciavarelli and the Jazz Ensemble students. They too had a performance this past week, at the San Elijo Jazz Invitational. Students participated in jam bands, watched other schools, and even got to listen to Mr. Mulvaney and Mr. Ciavarelli perform (briefly). Nice job!

This Week's Announcements & Events

  • Music Booster Meeting
    • Topics - Disney Trip 2010, the CPMA/Tango del Rey Jazz Festival, articulation for fall 2010, chaperones for upcoming field trips, coaching, and more.
    • 6:00 pm in Mr. Ciavarelli's room (Rm. 506)
  • Music Quiz
    • Period 6 - Concert Band (7th & 8th Graders)
    • Either 147 or 150 from Essential Elements - students choose the exercsie they would like to perform
  • Concert Opportunity - David Maslanka
    • The San Diego Winds, in collaboration with a number of local high schools, will be putting on a concert featuring the works of American composer David Maslanka.
    • The concert is Friday at 7:00pm in the new Lincoln High School auditorium.

Finally, students should be paid by this Friday for the Music in the Parks Festival. Our trip this year will take place on June 4th, but we need to submit our payment before then. Thank you for making this event possible by submitting your payments on time!

And yes, please review last week's post regarding Band at the Beach and the San Diego Youth Symphony - summer opportunities abound!

Here's the weekly music update for your magnet school for the arts!

First, thank you to everyone who attended the Joe's Pizza fundraiser - every little fundraising event helps. Also, I am still catching up on a few "techie" type tasks - namely, I will be posting some photos (and hopefully video) of the CMEA performances this week. So, stay tuned for some new pictures on this site and of course, the Facebook page.

As for this week - we've got two wonderful performance opportunities on tap (in addition to the CST - students, get some rest and eat breakfast)!

  • San Elijo Jazz Festival - On Wednesday, the Jazz Ensemble, Mr. Ciavarelli, and myself will be traveling to San Elijo Middle School for their annual jazz festival. This, of course, after AM CST testing.
  • CMEA Band & Orchestra Festival - The Debut Strings class will be performing Friday evening at Wangenheim Middle School. The timeline is available here, and all are welcome to attend.

Finally, as we begin (cautiously) to look towards the summer, it may be time to start thinking about summer opportunities (i.e. you can occupy your student for a week or more at a time with a summer music camp). Some summer music camps to consider locally:

SDYS

And of course, the San Diego Youth Symphony will be holding their auditions for the 2010-11 academic year in June. Their is an appropriate group for EVERY student, and yes, they have financial aid available. Here are the documents for the youth symphony:

In short, the opportunities are out there. Encourage your student to continue to work hard and seek out those experiences that will be both educational, challenging, and fun. Have a great week and go CPMA!

First, let's take a moment to recognize the fabulous performances from our Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra, and Concert Band at the April 9-10 CMEA Band & Orchestra Festival. all three groups played very well, and should be extremely proud of their work. In addition, they conducted themselves with class - simply a first rate job all around.

In fact, I was approached by multiple adjudicators who wanted to express to me personally the tremendous growth they observed from our school, program, and students. So, to the over 100 students who participated in this event, bravo on a job well done!

Now, on to this week's announcements and information:
  • Guys and Dolls - Come support fellow CPMA students as they put on the musical Guys and Dolls. The show will run for two days - Wednesday and Thursday!
  • Playing Quizzes  - The Debut Strings class will be taking playing examinations this week on their concert music.
  • Pizza Fundraiser @ Joe's Pizza - This Friday, April 23rd, from 4:30-11:00 the music department will be hosting a fundraiser at Joe's Pizza. Simply go and feast on salad and pizza, and 20% of the bill will be donated to the music department. (Promo Flier Attached)
On the horizon... The Debut Strings class will be traveling to Wangenheim Middle School (map) after school on Friday, April 30th. The timeline for the event is attached, and permission slips will be going home on Monday.
